Where does Entrepreneurs' Relief stand now after the 30th October budget?
We recently launched a petition to challenge the government's proposal to scrap Entrepreneurs' Relief. In just 24 hours, over 1,000 entrepreneurs added their names in opposition to this damaging change. Additionally, over 1,500 UK entrepreneurs and business leaders signed a letter to Chancellor Rachel Reeves, urging her to reconsider the proposed changes to business asset disposal relief (formerly known as Entrepreneurs' Relief) ahead of the budget on 30th October.
The change could see tax rates rise from 10% to as high as 45%, aligning with income tax rates.
For entrepreneurs, this would be a huge setback. Entrepreneurs' Relief recognises the personal and financial risks founders face when starting and scaling businesses. Scrapping or reducing it could stifle the innovation and entrepreneurship that drive the UK economy forward.
Entrepreneurs' Relief isn't just a tax benefit — it was created to recognise and reward those who build businesses, create jobs, and drive economic growth.
So, where does Business Asset Disposal Relief (BADR) stand now?
Despite our push to reinstate the £10m limit, the Rt Hon Rachel Reeves has chosen not to remove Entrepreneurs’ Relief entirely. The base rate of tax on Capital Gains is set to increase from 10% to 18% - which applies to Entrepreneurs Relief. This change could significantly impact the incentive to start and grow businesses in the UK.
Whilst Entrepreneurs' relief will not be scrapped, we still need to consider how the announced changes could significantly impact the incentive to start and grow businesses in the UK. We will continue to open up conversations and advocate for entrepreneurs and innovation. Seeing over 1,500 business leaders united in this campaign has been inspiring!
